Fascia: Your dog’s best kept secret!

For decades, if you looked at a veterinary anatomy textbook, you would see beautiful diagrams of muscles, bones, and organs, all neatly separated into 11 distinct systems. These systems are practically identical to the biological systems found in humans. But there was a hidden secret! Something that had been lying in plain sight for millennia. Something that was routinely, scraped away and discarded during surgeries and dissections because it was considered insignificant. Something that only in the last 20 years or so has been recognised as the most vital structure of the body: Fascia! Far from being "nothing," we now know this continuous three-dimensional web is “everything”.

Fascinating Fascia

Fascia is a strong, flexible, continuous three-dimensional web of connective tissue, with no beginning and no end. As the most abundant material in your dog's body, it weaves through the entire body enveloping and separating every single muscle fibre, bone, organ, blood vessel, and nerve, reaching all the way down to the individual cells. In essence, fascia is the system that all other systems are poured into. It acts as a global, interconnected network that not only provides structural support but also serves as a high-speed communication system, connecting everything in your dog’s body to everything else.

To see the fascinating world of fascia for yourself check out this video produced by French surgeon Jean-Claude Guimberteau.

Why has fascia been a secret for so long?

You might wonder, if fascia is so vital why haven't we heard more about it until recently? The truth is that our society, and our way of thinking, is physically built on the idea of dividing and separating for a few key reasons:

1.     Everything is a ‘machine’: From a young age, we are programmed to view the body like a machine with many separate parts (bones, muscles, and organs) that can be individually broken and fixed. This perspective traces back to the Scientific Revolution (during the 16th and 17th centuries), when nature began to be viewed as a mechanical system rather than a living organism.

2.    The Veterinary Model: The current veterinary profession has continued this trend by becoming increasingly specialised. While having neurologists, cardiologists and orthopaedists has led to great scientific progress, it focuses on treating isolated body parts or primary symptoms rather than the whole dog.

3.    Dead vs. Living Anatomy: For centuries, our understanding of anatomy was built on studying dead bodies, where the tissue is still and the fluid has stopped flowing. In a living dog, fascia is a vibrant, pulsating environment filled with fluid and constant motion.

By constantly dividing and separating the body into smaller and smaller pieces, we have created a very limited holistic understanding of how dogs function as one single, magnificent unit.

The secret is out!

After centuries of being discarded as nothing, we now know that fascia is everything. To truly understand your dog’s health, you must join this global revolution and challenge your entire way of looking at their body. When we stop seeing our dogs as a collection of separate parts and start seeing them as a single, living organism, the true power of fascia becomes clear. You are no longer just looking at a dog, you are seeing a fascinating, three-dimensional communication system that establishes interconnection between every single living cell.

In my next blog, we will dive deeper into what this "web" is actually made of and why "sliding and gliding" is the secret to your dog’s mobility.
