"But the X-ray was Clear!": The Hidden Truth About Myofascial Pain

In my last blog, we discovered that your dog’s fascia is a "Sensory Superhighway" that never forgets a trauma. But what happens when that superhighway hits a massive traffic jam? Let’s look at the invisible culprit behind so many mystery limps and stiff movements, Myofascial Pain!


 

If you have ever taken your dog to the vet because they seem "off," only to be told that their X-rays and MRI scans are perfectly clear, you have likely encountered the hidden world of fascial dysfunction.

 

The Ghost in the Machine

The most frustrating thing about myofascial pain is that it does not show up on orthodox medical tests. As we already know fascia is an intricate web of soft tissue, so it is invisible on X-rays and CT scans, which are designed to see "broken parts" like bones.

 

When your dog has a myofascial restriction, they aren't "broken," they are stuck. This is a chronic condition where the fascia and the muscular system become functionally interlinked in a cycle of tension. If the muscles are injured, the fascia tightens. If the fascia is tight, the muscles can't work. It’s a physical stalemate that causes constant discomfort and makes every movement a struggle.

 

Flowing River to Sticky Toffee

In a healthy dog, fascia is 70% water. This water acts as the ultimate lubricant, for the collagen fibres to "slide and glide" effortlessly over one another. In a healthy, well-hydrated dog, the fascia remains soft and pliable, stretching without restriction to provide the elastic recoil and fluid motion necessary to support your dog’s entire mobility.

 

But when your dog sustains a physical injury, undergoes surgery, or even experiences emotional distress, the collagen fibres in the fascia begin to dehydrate. As the water is pushed out, the fascia loses its "spring" and becomes hard and gel-like (think of it turning from a fluid stream into thick, sticky toffee). This leads to a painful chain reaction:


1.     Fibres Shorten and Thicken: The collagen fibres stick together, creating a literal "knot" in the web.

2.    The Squeeze: This thickened fascia begins to compress the tiny capillaries and sensitive nerves passing through it.

3.    The Overcompensation Loop: Because the web is continuous, a restriction in one area of the body will force your dog to adopt asymmetric movement patterns that create even more pain elsewhere.

 

Little Things Add Up

It isn't always an acute trauma that causes myofascial dysfunction. Fascia can become "stuck" due to:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): constantly jumping on/off furniture, running up and down stairs, slipping on hard floors, to name just a few.

  • Aging: As dogs age, they naturally lose collagen and hydration, causing the fascia to "bed down" and adhere.

  • Lack of Activity: Remember Thixotropy? If a dog is still for too long, the liquid fascia solidifies, making them feel like they are wearing a suit two sizes too small.

 

Getting the River Flowing Again

This is where Myofascial Release (MFR) comes in. Unlike standard massage, which might just rub the surface, MFR is a clinical approach designed to rehydrate the web. By using a "listening touch" and gentle, sustained pressure, therapists of the Canine Massage Guild can actually change the physical state of the tissue. We aren't just fixing an issue we are:

  • Creating Space: Widening the gaps between fibres so blood and oxygen can flow again.

  • Restoring the Glide: Turning that toffee back into a lubricant so muscles can move without friction.

  • Sending a "Safe" Signal: Telling the nervous system it can finally let go of that old frozen state of trauma.

 

Working "With" Your Dog

As a therapist trained in the Lenton Method®, my goal is to break the pain cycle in just 1 to 3 sessions. I do not work on your dog. I work with them, respecting them as individuals. By changing the fascia, we change the posture, and by changing the posture, we change the dog's entire quality of life. So if your dog is slowing down, it might not just be old age. It might be a dehydrated fascial web that has forgotten how to let go.

 

One final Thought!

I hope my blogs have been able to shed some light onto the fascinating world of fascia. As a therapist, I do not see your dog as a collection of parts or a medical diagnosis like arthritis or hip dysplasia. I see them as an individual with a spirit and a soul who’s entire intricate web of fascia carries their life story. By challenging the old way of looking at the body, we can finally stop just fixing parts and start restoring the holistic health and vitality your dog deserves.
